PHOENIX — Drivers using Interstate 17 in north Phoenix may have to change their commute route while the Arizona Department of Transportation works on a pavement improvement project.

According to ADOT, construction will start on I-17 between Happy Valley Road and State Route 74 in May. It's expected to take one year to finish. The project will require overnight and weekend lane restrictions, including full freeway closures, according to ADOT.

They will post advance notice of restrictions and closures on the project website and to individuals who subscribe to receive alerts.

"The work is designed to improve the freeway’s driving surface and provide longer-lasting, upgraded pavement conditions," according to ADOT.

Work will include:

  • Removing the existing asphalt pavement and repairing the existing concrete surface
  • Diamond grinding the existing concrete to provide a smooth roadway surface
  • Making bridge deck repairs
  • Replacing pavement markings and other improvements
