TEMPE, Ariz. — A man is dead after an Arizona Department of Public Safety trooper attempted to contact the man, who was driving a car near State Route 101 in Tempe, authorities said.

Around 2 a.m. on Sunday, a DPS trooper stopped a vehicle that was parked on the left shoulder of SR 101, just south of University Drive. The vehicle matched the description of a vehicle recently reported for erratic driving behavior, authorities said.

According to DPS, the trooper attempted to contact the driver of the vehicle, but the driver "refused to follow commands" and barricaded himself in the vehicle. The driver was later identified as Lemonte Anthony Knobelock, 44, of Mesa, Arizona.

During the incident, Knobelock then reportedly pulled out a handgun, DPS said, and a shooting that involved the DPS trooper occurred. Authorities did not give any further details regarding what led up to the shooting.

Knobelock died after the shooting, authorities said. No troopers were injured during the incident.
