Phoenix and Philly working to strike out hunger during NLCS

Food banks in Philly and Phoenix are battling it out to see which city can raise the most money to help feed hungry families.

PHOENIX — The NLCS between the Diamondbacks and the Phillies isn't the only challenge going on between Phoenix and Philadelphia right now. The two cities are also working to strike out hunger during the series.

Philly and Phoenix are battling it out to see which city can raise the most money to help feed hungry families.

Up to bat in the "Strike Out Hunger Challenge" are St. Mary's Food Bank in Phoenix and the Philabundance in Philadelphia.

As of Game 6, St. Mary's has raised enough for 125,000 meals. Donation totals are at $23,127.

Both the food banks are hoping Game 7 of the series will continue the flow of much-needed donations.

If you want to donate to the cause and help out St. Mary's you can click here.

What is the Valley?:

“The Valley” is what locals call the Phoenix Metropolitan Area. It is considered the largest metropolitan area in the Southwest.

The Valley is made up of various major cities other than Phoenix, including:

  • Mesa
  • Chandler
  • Scottsdale
  • Tempe
  • Glendale
  • Surprise
  • Peoria
  • Gilbert
  • El Mirage
  • Avondale
  • Litchfield Park
  • Goodyear
  • Buckeye

Whether a city is in the “East Valley” or “West Valley” depends on where it is in relation to Phoenix.

The cities of the Valley have a combined population of 4,845,832 people, according to the 2020 United States Census. This makes it the 11th largest metropolitan area in the country right behind the Boston and Atlanta areas.
