'We are not in the clear': Glendale teen left fighting for his life after hit-and-run crash

Glendale police say a man was arrested on Saturday in connection to the hit-and-run crash involving a teen.

GLENDALE, Ariz. — A man is in police custody after allegedly hitting a teen boy and driving away.

Glendale police said 27-year-old Joshua Holbert turned himself in two days after the crash near 47th and Northern avenues.

Dozens of people gathered in red at that intersection Sunday night to pray for the injured teen, 13-year-old Elias Bizzle.

"I'm not the only one hurting. It's the whole community," the teen's mom, Victoria Bizzle, said.

Elias Bizzle is still in the hospital with serious injuries, including a fractured skull and broken bones, according to his mother.

“My son is fighting for his life. We are not in the clear," Victoria Bizzle said.

Police said Elias Bizzle and his friend were crossing the street on their bikes when a car hit and seriously injured the teen.

“All he was doing was being a kid and riding his bike. He knew he had to come home before the lights were on," Victoria Bizzle said.

Court records reveal Holbert initially took off, but turned himself in after police seized his truck and searched his apartment.

Holbert, who has a history of reckless driving, admitted to hitting the teen and driving off, according to court records.

“He didn’t deserve this. No one deserves it," Victoria Bizzle said.

Victoria Bizzle said she finds some relief in the arrest, but said she won't be okay until her son makes a full recovery.

“Justice is going to be served and I want to make sure that no other parent goes through what I’m going through because this is torture. It is pure torture to see your 13-year-old laying so helpless and you can’t do nothing about it," Victoria Bizzle said.

Court records reveal Holbert was not under the influence at the time of the crash.

Holbert is facing one felony charge.

Friends of the Bizzle family created a GoFundMe page to help pay for medical expenses. Donations can be made here.
