Man pointed lighter that looked like gun at Glendale officer before being shot, records show

Police said the incident happened Sunday afternoon near 51st and Myrtle avenues.

GLENDALE, Ariz. — The man who was shot by Glendale police on Sunday was waving around a gun-shaped lighter and pointed it toward an officer before he was shot, according to newly obtained court documents.

Officers were called out to a store Sunday near 51st and Myrtle avenues after receiving reports that a person was shoplifting and acting "erratically," waving around what appeared to be a gun, according to court documents.

An arriving officer found the man, identified as Gohan Kancab, at a nearby bus stop and ordered Kancab to show the officer his hands. Kancab then pointed the lighter that looked like a gun at the officer and was shot in the shoulder, court documents said.

Kancab was taken to a nearby hospital to be treated and then to the Surprise Police Department to be questioned. Court documents say he told police he didn't comply with the officer's commands because he was "scared and stupid" and admitted to using the lighter.

The suspect is facing charges of aggravated assault with a simulated weapon, aggravated assault on a police officer, disorderly conduct involving weapons and shoplifting.
