Maricopa County spending $5M to convert Super 8 hotel into affordable housing

County supervisors approved spending millions on projects intended to provide more affordable housing units to the Valley.

PHOENIX — The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors voted Wednesday to spend $10 million on two housing projects intended to help low-income seniors and families.

The allocation includes spending $5 million on converting a 125-room Super 8 hotel near Northern Avenue and Interstate 17 into a housing complex for people 55 and over who have been experiencing homelessness. At least 40 of the units in the complex will be reserved for residents with an income that's at or below 30% of the area median income.

The county will also contribute $5 million on constructing new affordable housing units adjacent to Edison Park, near 20th and Roosevelt streets. This community, called Horizon on Villa, will include at least 109 units and 73 of which will be reserved to households earning at or below 60% of the area median income, records show.

In total, up to 550 people are expected to benefit from the two housing projects. The funding for these projects was provided through the American Rescue Plan Act.

"We're putting this funding to work for our community, making sure that our seniors have a place to call home and families are able to not only afford living in our County’s largest city, but also have a home where they can thrive," Board Chairman Clint Hickman said in a statement.
