East Valley landfill fire still smoldering. It smells, but air quality is good, moderate in some areas

The fire started in the section of the landfill where green waste such as landscaping materials like wood, leaves and grass were being stored.

PHOENIX — Some East Valley residents are still smelling smoke. It's from a large fire on the Salt River Indian Reservation near Loop 202 and Gilbert Road. It's been suppressed but is still smoldering, according to officials in Scottsdale.

For some, it will have an impact close to where the fire is located.

"We're worried about the particulate matter that gets thrown up into the air and then spreads out from where the fire is," 12News meteorologist Chris Dunn said.

Wednesday's air quality, according to Maricopa County's air quality status map, is mostly green which is "good" status. There are a few yellow areas that are considered "moderate," especially in the northeast Valley, and could affect children and some people with preexisting health conditions.

If you smell smoke or are sensitive to smoke, the county recommends staying inside.

According to officials, the fire started Saturday in the section of the landfill where “green waste” such as landscaping materials like wood, leaves and grass were being stored.

Plumes of smoke could be seen for miles.

The fire was captured on video by ADOT cameras in the area.
