IRS agent indicted for killing another agent at Phoenix shooting range

A federal agent from the IRS has been indicted for involuntary manslaughter.

PHOENIX — An Internal Revenue Service agent from Peoria has been criminally charged in the shooting death of another federal agent last August at a shooting range in north Phoenix.

Special Agent Patrick Bauer, 47, was killed after he was shot by an instructor who allegedly mishandled a firearm at the Federal Correctional Institution. Bauer left behind a wife and four kids.

The other agent, identified as 42-year-old Larry Edward Brown of Peoria, was indicted this week for involuntary manslaughter concerning the Aug. 17 shooting, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office of Arizona.

According to the indictment, Brown and Bauer were the only people inside a small room on the firing range when a gun Brown was allegedly handling was fired. A witness reported seeing Brown run out of the room and yell, "I shot Pat!"

Brown, who has been a special agent for over 12 years, was later heard saying he "should know better" since he's a use-of-force instructor, court records show.

If convicted, Brown faces up to eight years in prison.
