Family asking for help after monsoon storm destroys home

Suzette Martinez was found under a stove and kitchen cabinets after strong winds flipped her trailer.

MESA, Ariz. — Family and friends were combing through the debris of what’s left of a trailer Monday morning after a massive monsoon storm.

The storm that rolled through Sunday night blew through the property on the Salt River Reservation, leaving pieces of the home strewn all over the property.

“Terrible. I mean everything was rattling. Everything was moving,” Elaine Cabrera said.

She lives in the trailer next door, and she lost a few windows.

“I mean it was just high winds,” said Paula Ray.

It was Paula and Elaine’s sister’s trailer that was decimated and ripped from its foundation.

“That’s her trailer bottom right there. All the way in the road,” said Cabrera.

Unfortunately, their sister Suzette Martinez was inside at the time.

“She said she felt her trailer lift all the way up. Come down and roll,” said Cabrera.

“It flipped a few times with her in the trailer,” said Ray.

“She ended up getting stuck under her stove and kitchen cabinets,” said Cabrera.

Martinez was transported to an area hospital and is currently in intensive care awaiting surgery.

“She got a broken back. Two places on her back. Lower back,” said Cabrera.

“Just thinking of my sister right now,” said Ray.

The family has set up a GoFundMe account to help with medical costs.
