Witnesses rush to help semi driver injured in fiery crash on freeway

The driver was taken to a local hospital. He is expected to survive his injuries.

PHOENIX — Several people were seen rushing toward a fiery semi-truck wreck on Loop-101 Agua Fria near Peoria Avenue Tuesday afternoon so they could help the driver.

The semi collided into the median wall on the ramp, tilted on its side, and caught on fire, DPS said.

Multiple good Samaritans parked their cars and worked together, trying to lift the wreckage to get the driver out. Witnesses said the driver's legs were pinned, and he was unable to escape.

Crews arrived on the scene and cut the driver out, then took him to a local hospital.

Firefighters said the driver of the semi had several injuries, but he is expected to be OK.

The Peoria on-ramp and the freeway were closed for several hours.
