PHOENIX — Speed was a factor in the fiery crash in the West Valley that killed one person and left another one injured, Phoenix police said.

Officials said the accident happened near the intersection of 83rd Avenue and Thomas Road on Friday night. That is just northwest of the Talking Stick Resort Amphitheater and just west of Desert Sky Mall.

When crews got to the scene, they found that multiple vehicles had collided and one of them had caught fire. Firefighters were able to put that fire out. Phoenix police said the one person in the vehicle that caught on fire was later identified as 21-year-old Jesus Martinez-Goana.

Martinez-Goana died at the scene of the crash. The man driving the other vehicle was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Preliminary information shows the vehicle was driven by Martinez-Goana was likely driving at a high rate of speed on Thomas Road before entering the intersection at 83rd Avenue. The other vehicle appeared to be making a left turn onto 83rd Avenue from Thomas Road, police said.

The crash then caused the car driven by Martinez-Goana to hit a tree and catch fire, police said.
