These videos are why people question Mesa PD's use of force

The Mesa Police Department has been in the spotlight recently, but incidents go back a few years.

MESA, Ariz. - Two videos released in recent weeks are spotlighting the Mesa police department and have people questioning their use of force.

But those questions began more than a year ago.

The first body camera video to cast a shadow on Mesa police was the 2016 shooting of Daniel Shaver by former officer Phillip Brailsford.

Police had been called to a report of a man with a gun.

Shaver was unarmed but reach for his waistband in what police called a "drawstroke" movement. Other investigators found Shaver may have only been reaching for his waistband.

Brailsford was charged with murder but found not guilty.

In January of 2018, police body camera shows an officer punching Jose Luis Conde. Another officer is shown mocking Conde as he lay bleeding on the hospital floor.

Conde was arrested for disorderly conduct and is now suing the department.

On February 14, Mesa officer wrestled an 86-year-old grandmother to the ground.

Mesa PD said it happened at the scene of a suicidal man with a gun and officers were trying to keep her out of harm's way.

On May 15 officers arrested a 15-year-old suspect. Body camera video shows the suspect and officer cursing at each other.

Mesa Police suspended two of those officers pending an investigation.

Finally, on May 23, the video of police repeatedly punching and kneeing Robert Johnson.

Johnson was not the subject of the initial investigation but was later charged with disorderly conduct. Those charges were since dropped. Some of the officers involved in the Johnson incident were also involved in the arrest of the 15 year old.
