1 dead following welfare check by Phoenix police

Phoenix police received a call regarding water coming out of a residence near 32nd and Van Buren streets. The welfare check ended in gunfire.

PHOENIX — A man is dead following a wellness check conducted by the Phoenix Police Department, police said. 

Phoenix police officers responded to a residence near 32nd and Van Buren streets to perform a welfare check on Thursday morning. Details on the call indicated that there was water running out of the residence, which officers did find upon arrival, police said. 

Two officers arrived on scene and were able to make contact with a man inside the residence. While speaking with officers, the man pulled out a handgun and pointed it in the direction of the officers, police said.

The officers retreated and then one officer exchanged gunfire with the man. Police did not say who shot first. 

The man involved in the shooting was located inside the residence with at least one gunshot wound and was pronounced deceased on scene, police said. 

Both a criminal and an internal investigation are being conducted, police said. There is body camera footage from the two officers, as well, police said.

Anyone who has information on a crime or recognizes a suspect described by the program is asked to call 480-948-6377, go to the program's website online or download the Silent Witness app to provide a tip. The identity of anyone who submits a tip is kept anonymous. 

Calls to Silent Witness are answered 24/7 by a live person and submitted tips are accepted at all times. Submitted tips are then sent to the detective(s) in charge of the specific case. 

Individuals who submit tips that lead to an arrest or indictment in the case can get a reward of up to $1,000.
