MESA, Ariz. — The person who was taken to the hospital after a shooting Friday afternoon involving officers with the Mesa Police Department has been identified.
The shooting happened near Stapley Drive and Main Street, police said. No officers were injured.
Police responded to a call of a disturbance at 2:26 p.m. where a man, later identified as 27-year-old David Dimas, locked himself in a shed attached to a mobile home after an argument with his family.
Dimas was lighting things on fire in the shed, police said. That's when a woman tried to extinguish the fire through a hole in the wall of the shed and saw Dimas trying to harm himself.
Police removed everyone from the mobile home including children. Police then called for Dimas to exit the shed. He did but then continued to advance at officers, ignoring their commands, police said. He was being "aggressive" and had the item he was using to self-harm.
It was later determined that Dimas had a cordless drill in one hand and a utility knife in the other that were concealed by the t-shirts around his hands, police said.
Officers deployed Taser and bean bag rounds but the man kept advancing on officers. The officers then shot him, secured the scene and gave him medical attention. He was taken to hospital in serious condition, police said.
