One of Phoenix's tallest buildings will soon be taken over by Phoenix PD

The 27-story building in downtown Phoenix was constructed in 1971. The city bought it after Wells Fargo Bank moved to another location.

PHOENIX — The former Wells Fargo Plaza in downtown Phoenix will soon become the new headquarters for the Phoenix Police Department after the city spends $180 million renovating the 52-year-old building.

100 West, located near 1st Avenue and Washington Street, is currently undergoing a makeover to become the new home for Phoenix's police department.

“As our city continues to grow, it’s important to me that local government remains accessible and centrally located," Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego said in a statement. "That’s why it’s great that we’re moving forward on 100 West, which is in close proximity to both bus routes and light rail stations, as well as other government agencies that serve both our residents and visitors alike."

The city claims it is saving $200 million by renovating the old building instead of constructing a new structure for the police department. The current police headquarters on Washington Street first opened in 1975.

100 West is listed as the 11th tallest building in Phoenix, just a few feet shorter than the Sheraton building and Bank of America Tower. It was once the tallest structure in Phoenix before it was eclipsed by Chase Tower in 1972.

The city purchased the 500,000-square-foot building after Wells Fargo Bank relocated to a new location.

Renovations of the tower are expected to be completed by the summer of 2025.
