National Missing Children's Day: A look at Arizona's missing kids

Some high-profile cases remain unsolved.

Jacqueline Vasquez was just 3 months old when her mom took her to a swap meet in Avondale.

Her mom, Olivia Castenada, left the baby in an infant carrier outside a portable toilet while she and her other daughter went inside. By the time Castenada exited the stall, Jacqueline was gone.

It has been 16 years since the little baby went missing.

"I have kids -- my heart breaks for these families," said Phoenix Police Sgt. Vince Lewis.

Every day, more than 2,000 kids are reported missing in the United States. Most are found or return home after running away.

Unfortunately, there are also thousands of children who have never been found.

Jesse Wilson was last seen in July 18, 2016. The 10-year-old Buckeye boy has not been seen since. Police and volunteers searched the nearby desert with no luck.

Six years ago, the Valley was overcome when news that a little girl, Jhessye Shockley was missing. Again, searches proved futile in finding Jhessye.

Police did later arrest her mom for murder and a jury convicted Jerice Hunter for her daughter’s death. Investigators have yet to find a body.

Other high-profile cases include Gabriel Johnson, the baby who went missing in December of 2009.

His mother Elizabeth Johnson at one point admitted to killing Gabriel but later told police she gave him to a family in Texas.

Johnson was sentenced to five years in prison for conspiracy to commit custodial interference.

Thursday is National Missing Children's Day.

Please take the time to visit the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children's website and look for kids in Arizona who are still listed as missing.

If you have any information that could help, please call your local police department.
