GLENDALE, Ariz. — A fire that destroyed a garage in Glendale is believed to have been caused by an electric scooter, according to the Glendale Fire Department.

The Phoenix, Glendale and Peoria fire departments all responded to the fire Saturday night just before 11 p.m. Crews initially thought the vehicle in the garage caused the fire.

The car was pulled out of the garage so that crews could safely extinguish the fire without worrying about the roof collapsing onto firefighters, officials said. Investigators later determined the fire was caused by an electric scooter.

No injuries were reported from the fire but four people were displaced, officials said.

Nationally, there were more than 200 battery-related fires reported to the Consumer Product Safety Commission from 39 states over the past two years, including 19 deaths blamed on so-called micromobility devices that include battery-powered scooters, bicycles and hoverboards.
