Dozens of dead fish seen at Tempe Town Lake

Tempe Town Lake is reopened following an algae bloom, which can affect fish, city officials say.

TEMPE, Ariz. — Walking around Tempe Town Lake, you might have seen a "fishy sight."

Dozens of dead fish were spotted around Tempe Town Lake Wednesday afternoon. According to city officials, algae blooms in the lake are very common and can affect fish. The lake was closed for over a week out of an abundance of caution.

On March 6, standup paddle boarding and other water-related activities were closed to prevent exposure to the water, officials said. The lake reopened on March 16 after water quality testing results met Environmental Protection Agency safety standards.

The City of Tempe said the lake is inspected and cleaned daily when conditions allow, which includes "collecting dead fish" and other debris.
