CHANDLER, Ariz. — For as long as he can remember, Jacob Ezolt has had a passion for geography.

The Chandler teen memorized the states and capitols in kindergarten, could name every country and their flags by 11 years old, and has competed in geography competitions at the state, regional and national levels — all before starting high school.

"It all started in kindergarten, when I first got into geography," Jacob Ezolt, 14, said, with a smile. "I got so into it, I would end up trying to correct the teachers on multiple occasions. I'd actually stand up and tell them where certain places were if they got it wrong."

And Jacob Ezolt's love for geography only grew.

This summer, Jacob Ezolt will be one of the competitors at the 3rd International Geography Championships held in Vienna, Austria. The International Geography Championships is organized by International Academic Competitions and brings top geography students from around the world together to compete.

"It's been amazing, just watching him as a little kid, just be interested," Aaron Ezolt, Jacob's dad, said. "We're so amazingly proud of him."

To prepare for the championships, Jacob Ezolt said he is spending as much time as possible studying. A geography bee is not like a spelling bee, Jacob Ezolt explained. The questions at a geography bee are split into three parts, starting with more difficult questions first.

But Jacob Ezolt is ready for the challenge: the teen said he hopes to make it as far as he can in the competition.

"This summer, I really hope I can bring my family with me, as they're my main supporters," Jacob Ezolt said. "I hope I can win for them as well. I just want to make everyone proud."

The championships will be hosted July 13 through 20. Ezolt is raising money to pay for the cost of his trip to Austria. More information on how to support him can be found here.
