What Using OLD Makeup Really Does to Your Skin

Written by Derma Health

Do you remember the last time you replaced your mascara tube? Those magic bottles seem to last forever! So much of our makeup can be used long after it should be replaced, and it is far easier to make it last than to spend the time and money to replace something that is not finished.

We are here to tell you this is one habit you need to kick!

Makeup is made up of many perishable elements, that is, chemicals and products that have an expiration date. Continuing to apply these products to your skin after they have begun to break down can have detrimental effects on your skin. Whether you are a makeup collector and rotate through products that have been in your bag for years or you like to use the makeup you have down to the last drop, we’re here to tell you why you need to toss your old makeup and upgrade your cosmetics!

What happens when makeup expires?

Why are we making such a big fuss about replacing your makeup? As you know, your skin is our obsession, and there is nothing we want more than to see each of your faces clear, glowing and healthy. So, we think you need to know about what you are putting on your skin when you apply expired makeup.

When makeup “expires,” it is because the molecules in the product have begun to break down and may react to each other and your skin in different ways. For example, a mascara you once loved might start giving you irritation around your eyes; your go-to concealer may begin to cause you breakouts. Whatever it might be, when your makeup begins to take on a form it was not intended to be, it can have an adverse reaction and cause contact dermatitis, or skin inflammation, which may lead to redness, bumps, rashes, blisters and swelling.

Unexpected blemishes are a problem in themselves, but what is happening beneath the surface that is affecting the health of your skin? Expired makeup (because of exposure to the elements in your bathroom, in the air, in bags in which they sit) easily stores bacteria within it, which has an effect on the product itself and, of course, your skin. You may develop irritation, acne, bacteria buildup and even pink eye from products like eyeliner and mascara. You work so hard to care for your skin when it comes to cleaning; avoid reversing that care by using harmful products past their expiration.

What about makeup without an expiration date?

Many of you might be thinking, what is this makeup expiration date you’re talking about? We don’t blame you! Many of our makeup products do not feature expiration dates, but generally similar products last the same amount of time. The general expiration dates for your makeup are as follows:

· Mascara: 2-3 months

· Eyeliner/shadow: 6-12 months

· Lipstick: 18 months

· Foundation/powder/facial makeup: 12 months

Skin Tip: Clean or Replace Old Sponges!

Have you been experiencing mild breakouts lately? You may want to consider cleaning or replacing your makeup brushes and sponges! These tools get very dirty very quickly and can be so harmful to your skin, as they hold on to more bacteria every day. Sponges should be replaced on a weekly basis (if used every day), and brushes should be cleaned just as often with a solution of water and shampoo. Take care of your skin so you can get the most out of your beauty products!
