PHOENIX — A murder case that went cold after two people were shot and killed during a home robbery in south Phoenix in 2006 is cold no longer as two men have been charged in the case, Phoenix police announced Friday night.

At about 7 a.m. on August 13, 2006, two armed men broke into a home near the intersection of 24th Street and Roeser Road in south Phoenix to rob it, according to police.

Two people that were inside the home, 33-year-old Clarissa Saunders and 27-year-old Rahmon Brown, were shot and killed.

Phoenix Police Department homicide detectives responded to the scene and investigated every lead they had at the team to find who killed Saunders and Brown, but were ultimately unable to and the case went cold.

The department's Cold Case Homicide Squad took over the investigation and now, nearly 18 years later, has been able to identify and charge two suspects in the case, 45-year-old Johnnie Herron and 46-year-old Johnny Maxwell.

Maxwell was already in custody for an unrelated case. Phoenix police said he will be charged with "multiple felonies" related to this case.

Herron was arrested on March 22 and has been booked into jail on multiple counts, which include murder.

Police did not say how Maxwell and Herron were identified as the suspects in this case.

This is a developing story and more details will be added as they are made available.
