TUCSON, Ariz. — Editor's note: The video above is from a newscast in May 2016.

The man convicted of an all-night shooting spree on Beeline Highway, also known as State Route 87, that injured two people in 2016 has died in prison, according to the Arizona Department of Corrections, Rehabilitation and Reentry

James David Walker was in prison for a shooting spree that took place on an 18-mile-long stretch of Beeline Highway in May 2016

Walker shot at and hit an Arizona Department of Public Safety cruiser and two other vehicles. Two people were hurt.

He used an AR-15 to shoot at cars on the highway and one of the cars he hit ended up catching fire.

After the first shooting, investigators at the time said Walker carjacked a vehicle and drove north on Beeline Highway. He eventually drove that car into a ditch and opened fire once again before running away and refusing orders to surrender.

A police dog eventually caught Walker.

In Dec. 2018, Walker was sentenced to 30 years in prison for 15 counts of aggravated assault and two counts of armed robbery and a dangerous drug violation.

Walker had been assigned to the Arizona State Prison Complex - Tucson, where he died by suicide on Saturday.

The Arizona Department of Corrections, Rehabilitation and Reentry said Walker was found unresponsive in his cell. Prison staff performed live-saving measures on him until paramedics arrived. Paramedics and medical staff later pronounced Walker dead.

The Beeline Highway shootings were not Walker's first run-in with law enforcement. On Halloween in 1995, when he was 16, Walker shot two people in Chandler after a fight about the costume he was wearing. One of those people died. Walker ended up being convicted of second-degree murder and aggravated assault and spent 16 years in prison. He was released in Jan. 2014.

In March 2016, two months before the shooting on Beeline Highway, Walker was arrested on suspicion of doing drugs in a parking lot in Mesa. When police tried to detain him, he rammed into a police car.

Walker was 44 years old.
