Our 12 News A+ Teacher of the Week is an 8th grade teacher that engages his students and ensures they understand how reading is a part of daily life.
Students surprised David Mittel from Kyrene Akimel A-Al Middle School during a class to congratulate him, saying he's not only a teacher who encourages his students to express themselves, but his ability to get the toughest kind to focus and learn is inspiring to those around him.
“There are a lot of emotions, I mean obviously, with my retirement looming in the background, it’s nice,” said Mittel. “I enjoy what I do, I think we all would admit it’s nice to be recognized for things that we do in life, especially from the students.”
“It means a lot because that’s where I spend the majority of my day,” he said.
Mittel says he gets jazzed up about each lesson and it’s great when he can get a reaction back from the students.
“I have a theater background, so I kind of treat it like a show,” said Mittel. “I’ve got four productions or four shows in a day and there’s an excitement of getting the show ready and you know, whether I’m the director or the audience, I wear a lot of hats, I kind of look at it that way.”
