Arizona Farm Bureau says average Thanksgiving meal costs about $52, we put it to the test

We bought the items on the list to see for ourselves how much it would cost

PHOENIX — These days, shopping for food can be a hassle mainly because it usually costs an arm and a leg to get what you want. However, this Thanksgiving a new study shows you may be spending less.

The Arizona Farm Bureau released new findings that show this year people are spending on average $51.89 for a Thanksgiving meal feeding ten people. That cost, it states, is about 28% less than last year ($71.88). This includes the very basics: the turkey, pumpkin pie with whipped cream, milk, sweet potatoes, cranberries, stuffing, rolls with butter and a veggie tray. It also states the food was purchased without sales or promotions and should produce leftovers.

For many, it's a price that seems too good to be true so 12News decided to put it the numbers to the test and see what the items cost.

We were able to go to the Fry's off of 20th Street and Highland to find all the ingredients and ring them up.

According to the report, the Arizona Farm Bureau says the cost of turkey has fallen since last year. In 2022, the average cost for a 16-pound turkey was $32.02. This year, it's around $18.32. The cheapest Butterball turkey we found was a 12-pound turkey for about $23. It states one of the reasons for this was because the bird flu was less prevalent. This resulted in more birds at a cheaper cost.

After about an hour we were able to find all the items on the list and ring them up. While some of the goods were brand names, most were the generic Kroger brand. The total was $76.75, however, when we applied the membership discount and another $2.00 e-coupon from the app, the price dropped to $52.21.

In the end, we found reaching the average cost without promotions/sales may be a bit tricky, but if you find the right deals you can save some money.
