Free big dog adoptions at Arizona Humane Society Jan. 12-14

AHS is over capacity and hoping to clear out shelter space.

PHOENIX — This weekend the Arizona Humane Society (AHS) is offering free adoptions for the big dogs in its shelters.

The shelter is over capacity and hoping to clear out space.

"AHS’ latest adoption special aims to create more kennel space so the animal welfare organization can continue to support the community and keep pets safe and cared for,"  AHS said in a news release.

The special applies to dogs 50 pounds and over.

"Big dogs make great pets for active families and for individuals who enjoy hiking and outdoor activities," AHS said.

The organization said it has been more than a decade since they have taken in this many animals in a single year. The new year is already trending toward being similar to 2023.

AHS attributed the rise in intakes in 2023 to a variety of factors.

"A rise in animal cruelty cases, injured and abandoned strays, and housing and economic factors are fueling this increase," AHS said.

  • Friday, Jan. 12 – Sunday, Jan. 14
  • Available at both adoption locations (South Mountain & PetSmart off Miller & Camelback)
  • Adoption Hours are 11 a.m. – 6 p.m. daily.
