Sky Harbor staffing issues from COVID-19 to cause delays at TSA checkpoints

Officials said travelers can expect a wait time of up to 30 minutes to get through the A and B security lines.

PHOENIX — Travelers making their way through Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport on Friday can expect delays at some security checkpoints.

A shortage of TSA personnel is forcing two of four checkpoints at Terminal 4 to close starting at 4 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 7. The issue was caused by COVID-19 cases affecting staff, according to a joint statement from the airport and TSA released on Thursday.

It’s unknown when all four checkpoints will be reopened.

Officials said travelers can expect a wait time of up to 30 minutes to get through the A and B security lines.

The TSA precheck line won’t be affected. No delays are expected for security out of Terminal 3.

To expedite the security process, airport officials are recommending passengers double check the list of prohibited items for carry-on luggage.

A list can be found on the TSA website and current wait times can be found on Sky Harbor’s website.

Masks are still federally mandated inside all airports across the country and during flights.
