MESA, Ariz. — A woman is dead and a man is in the hospital after an early-morning crashe in Mesa.

According to early reports, deputies were first called to 99th Street and University Drive shortly after 1 a.m. on April 18 for reports that a man had crashed into a power pole in the area and caught fire.

While deputies were on their way, they were told that a second vehicle had veered off the road and struck a fence nearby. The woman driving looked badly hurt, officials said.

First responders took the woman to a hospital where she later died. She's been identified as 33-year-old Christina Diamond.

The man was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. Authorities believe that alcohol was involved in his crash.

MCSO said it appears the man was driving up to 105 mph before hitting Diamond's vehicle. The driver also showed signs of impairment, MCSO said.

The crash remains under investigation.
