GILBERT, Ariz. — The road to 1,000 wasn't always easy for Mesquite High School junior, Navae Guidry. The forward made the Varsity team as a freshman but it wasn't until the end of her sophomore year that she believed she could reach the 1,000-point club.
"I felt it was possible at 300, at the end of my sophomore year," Guidry said. "Because I am doubling my points at this point, just wait till my junior year and then it was over."
Guidry achieved the feat in the middle of the third quarter at home against Arcadia High School. The forward scored the basket while being fouled which was followed by a loud eruption from the fans and her teammates.
"It was so amazing!" Guidry said. "I just heard all of these screams and like, I really did it!"
Guidry's family and friends were all in attendance bearing signs congratulating her on the achievement itself. It was indeed a proud moment for mom and dad.
"It means the world to us," Mist Guidry, Navae's mother, said. "She's been playing and working really hard, she puts in a lot of work and a lot of time and she's earned it. We're happy to be here to support, all of her family, friends, and teammates, so this is for her."
Guidry acknowledged reaching a milestone like this wasn't easy but she attributed the help from her coaches and mentors each step of the way.
"You have to buckle down, be humble, do the stuff nobody else is doing and the points will come," Guidry said. "My coach tells me that all the time, so I just keep that in the back of my mind and remember it for every game."
As for what's next for the junior?
"I don't know," Guidry said with a smile," 1,500, here we come!"
