On the Mark: The wealthy and powerful have always had a 'side door' to elite universities

If you think the prosecution of those involved in the college admissions scandal will stop wealthy families from getting their kids into elite schools, whether they are qualified or not, I will respectfully tell you that you’re wrong.

“Outrageous” and “Sickening”… just some of the words heard this week when news broke of the college admissions scandal.

Sure, it is outrageous and sickening, but seriously, are any of us surprised?

This stuff has been going on for years. The only difference is, this time the cheaters got caught and exposed.

But if you think this will stop wealthy families from getting their kids into elite schools, whether they are qualified or not, I will respectfully tell you that you’re wrong.

Even Rick Singer, the alleged ringleader of the scam that bribed coaches and administrators to boost their kids' chances of getting into the "right" school admitted that elite schools have always had three ways to get in: the "front door," the traditional way; the "back door," wealthy donors who make massive contributions to the school to assure that their kids will get in—maybe unethical but legal—and finally, the “side door," the illegal way that has a lot of wealthy people on the phone to their lawyers this week.

Will we ever see a day when ALL students enter only through the front door? Probably not.

Here is this week's “On the Mark.”
