Uber gets green light at Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport

The board of directors unanimously approved the plan to allow Uber pickups and drop-offs.

Travel to and from the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport just got a little easier thanks to the Board of Directors who unanimously approved a plan calling for the use of the popular Uber rideshare company.

The announcement came Tuesday morning after deciding Uber would add to the already long list of ground transportation options travelers already have.

The announcement enables travelers to have immediate access to ground transportation to and from the airport, using one of the predominant app-based companies in the greater Phoenix market.

Ryan Smith, Director of Communications with Gateway Airport tells 12 News Lyft has been in operation at the airport for the last two years. Smith also says in those two years they've been in negotiations with Uber to make the plan happen. During those two years, Uber was not available for travelers.

It's estimated 4,000 to 6,000 passengers use Lyft as a means of ground transportation at Gateway.  According to the airport, Uber signed the same contract as Lyft, seeing a clear advantage of doing business at Gateway.

Smith says there will be a curbside special area allocated for Uber just outside baggage claim as passengers leave the airport. Gateway officials are also calling the move a financial gain for travelers, making their transportation costs cheaper and not such a burden on passenger wallets or purses.

In a published release by Gateway, other traditional forms of travel at Gateway will continue to be in use such as taxicabs, various shuttle services, limos as well as car rentals.
