Arizona State representative supports joint resolution to honor Sandra Day O'Connor with statue

There is now a push to honor the former U.S. Supreme Court justice with a statue in the U.S. Capitol building.

PHOENIX — There is now a push to honor former United States Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor with a statue in the U.S. Capitol.

Arizona State Representative Matt Gress held a news conference in downtown Phoenix on Monday, pledging his support to House Joint Resolution 2002. Gates sponsored the resolution asking Congress to authorize the placement of a statue honoring the former U.S. Supreme Court justice. 

According to a release about the conference, the statue of O’Connor will be in Statuary Hall inside the U.S. Capitol building in Washington, D.C., Gress was also be joined by U.S. Representative Juan Ciscomani and other notable dignitaries speaking in support of the resolution.

O'Connor was the first woman to serve on the Supreme Court and was a trailblazer and inspiration for women. 

She was from the state of Arizona and was an unwavering voice of moderate conservatism for more than two decades. O'Connor died on Dec. 1, 2023, at age 93.
