Phoenix woman finds mold in new can of soup

Edward Vila says his grandmother opened a can of Campbell's soup to find what appears to be black mold inside.
The expiration date on the can says "November 2016'.

A Phoenix resident had quite a surprise when she opened her can of Campbell's soup this week. Edward Vila says he and his grandmother, Silvina Vila, bought the can on Wednesday, April 15.

Just a few days later, Silvina was opening it to make dinner, but instead of tomato soup, she found this black substance.

Edward says he didn't see any dents or obvious openings in the can where air could have gotten in. The expiration date says 2016.

Megan Haney, a spokesperson for Campbell's, says from looking at the pictures, the substance appears to be mold. She says situations like this are extremely rare, but they do happen.

Haney says a hole the size of a pin-prick could compromise the airtight contents of a can.

She says reimbursement is decided on a case-by-case basis. Campbell's is working with the Vilas to compensate them.
