Mexican nationals in the U.S. can vote in Mexican presidential elections; Here's how

The Mexican presidential election is July 1. Here's how Mexican nationals can vote from the U.S.

The Mexican National Electoral Institute (INE) is working on encouraging their fellow citizens to vote during the presidential elections in July.

The INE is expecting a much better participation on the presidential elections in Mexico this year.

Mexican nationals living in the United States are eligible to vote as long as they’re at least 18 years old and have a voting credential. The Mexican Consulates in the U.S. are helping the INE with processing applications for voter IDs.

How can I vote from the U.S.?

The INE has a three-step process:

1. Get your voter ID card

2. Register to vote

3. You’ll get your ballot, complete it and return it

The voter ID needs to be processed before March 31

Obtaining a Mexican voter ID card:

• Schedule an appointment by calling MEXITEL 1-877-639-4835 or schedule it online.

• You’ll be asked to bring your birth certificate or naturalization certificate, a photo ID and probe of residence to your appointment.

• The document will arrive within 3-5 weeks; a signature will be required upon delivery. Track your card online.

• Once you receive it, activate the card online or by calling 1-866-986-8306.

Registering to vote:

If you processed your Mexican voter ID between September 1, 2017 and March 31, 2018, you signed a document during your appointment that gets you registered once you activate your card.

Otherwise, if you need to register, you can do so online.

Voting:

The electoral package will be received during the month of May and will include:

• Two sets of instructions: One will explain how to mark your vote and the other will explain how to return your ballot.

• Envelopes for each ballot in the package

• A prepaid envelope to return it via courier

You can always find information on the proposals and candidates on INE's website.

The deadline for the INE to have your ballots is 8 a.m. on June 30, a day before the elections in Mexico.
