Man who exchanged in gunfire with Mesa police officer dies

Mesa police identified the suspect as 40-year-old David Huffines.

MESA, Ariz — A suspect in a Mesa police shooting has died Sunday.

Mesa police said 40-year-old David Huffines died from his injuries after he was shot by a police officer near Main Street and Sossaman Road Friday night.

According to Mesa PD, officers were reportedly driving when they saw a man sitting on the side of the road about 8:15 p.m. They stopped to check on him.

Police said that the area was dark, so the officer asked the man to keep his hands visible as they talked.

That's when police say Huffines stood up, got a handgun and pointed it to the officer, police said.

There was an exchange of gunfire between Huffines and the officer, which stopped when the officer hit Huffines.

Police said Huffines received medical help at the scene and was taken to the hospital afterwards.

Saturday, the suspect was reported in critical condition. By Sunday he had died.

The police officer was not injured.

The investigation is ongoing.
