Two rescued by helicopter from Queen Creek wash rushing waters Friday

Rural Metro Fire said it as unknown how the two people got into the wash, but they were clinging to branches on a small land mass until rescue crews arrived on scene.

SAN TAN VALLEY, Ariz. - Two people were rescued by crews from a Queen Creek wash off of Kenworthy Road in San Tan Valley Friday afternoon by helicopter.

The Pinal County Sheriff's Office said a 23-year-old man and 31-year-old woman were trying to cross the wash on foot and the woman fell into the water and the man jumped in to try to get her.

The currents were too strong and the pair couldn't get out of the wash.

PCSO deputies and search and rescue teams reported to the scene and found they were clinging to branches on a small land mass until rescue crews arrived on scene and placed helmets and life jackets on the individuals.

Video from Sky 12 shows how fast the current of the wash was flowing as a helicopter eventually arrived on scene. The crews used towlines to get to the land mass the two were on until a DPS helicopter arrived on scene.

The helicopter lowered harnesses and then lifted each person and moved them over to dry land before lowering them to sheriff's deputies. Both were taken away on stretchers. It is unknown at this time if or what kind of injuries they may have.

“This is a dangerous reminder to stay clear of the washes," Sheriff Mark Lamb said. "It doesn’t matter if you are in your car or on foot. You are putting yourselves and the lives of first responders in danger when we try to save you. We want to thank DPS and Rural Metro Fire Department for their assistance in helping these two individuals get out of the wash safely.”
