Suspect dead after shot during confrontation with MCSO deputies in Mesa

The deputies were serving a search warrant in Mesa when shots were fired early Thursday morning.

MESA, Ariz. — A man is dead after he was shot during a confrontation with Maricopa County Sheriff's Office deputies early Thursday morning in Mesa.

The MCSO Tactical Operations Unit was serving a search warrant near Ellsworth Road and University Drive for an "armed and dangerous" suspect. During the search, the suspect allegedly fired shots and barricaded himself inside the residence. 

He later exited the home armed with a rifle and allegedly confronted members of the SWAT team, MCSO said. 

The suspect was shot and died at the scene. His identity has not been disclosed. No deputies were injured.

MCSO said the investigation is ongoing. The agency has not disclosed how many shots were fired nor how many deputies fired their weapon.

The county’s seat is located in Phoenix, which is also the state capital and the census-designated 5th most populous city in the United States.

The county was named after the Maricopa, or Piipaash, Native American Tribe.
