Suspect arrested after man stabbed up to 30 times at Phoenix bus stop

Police say the man was stabbed in the neck, back and side and was hospitalized in serious condition.

PHOENIX — Police in Phoenix say a suspect is jailed on suspicion of attempted second-degree murder after allegedly stabbing a man up to 30 times at a bus stop early Sunday.

According to court documents, 30-year-old Michael Angelo Smith and the victim exited the bus at 43rd Avenue and Buckeye Road together when Smith began stabbing the victim several times in the back.

The victim tried to get away by reentering the bus and fell onto the aisle next to the bus driver, after which Smith got on top of the victim and stabbed him in the side and neck.

Witnesses told police that Smith continued to stab the victim until Phoenix Fire Department responders were able to stop the attack.

Police say the man was hospitalized in serious condition.

Court documents show Smith used a six-inch folding knife and it was bent backward because of the force used to stab the victim.

Police didn't list a possible motive for the incident.

It was unclear Monday if Smith has a lawyer yet. They say Smith is being held on a $250,000 bond.
