19-year-old killed in crash with Phoenix police officer

Ashley Vailes was killed in a crash with a Phoenix police officer on Thursday.

PHOENIX — The victim in a deadly crash with a Phoenix police officer has been identified as 19-year-old Ashley Vailes.

The officer and the prisoner who was being transported were taken to the hospital as a precaution after the crash. They are both expected to be OK.

The crash happened just before 9 a.m. Thursday near the intersection of 35th Avenue and Thunderbird Road, according to police reports.

The officer was making a left turn onto 35th Avenue from Thunderbird Road and was involved in a crash with Vailes, who was traveling eastbound on Thunderbird, a police spokesperson said.

Just after the crash, the car Vailes was driving hit a pole and caught on fire. First responders were able to extinguish the flames, but Vailes was pronounced dead on the scene.

Witness statements and surveillance video led investigators to determine Vailes entered the intersection on a red light, Phoenix police said.

The investigation is ongoing.
