Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego launches campaign for final term in office

Gallego, who took office in 2019, announced that she would be seeking reelection Thursday morning.

PHOENIX — Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego announced Thursday morning that she will be seeking reelection for her final term in office.

Gallego, a democrat, took office in 2019 and is the second woman to be elected mayor in the city's history.

"We have accomplished so much over the last five years, from creating good-paying manufacturing jobs that don’t necessarily require a four-year degree to building the infrastructure we need to protect our water supply," Gallego said in a press release.

During Gallego's tenure as mayor, the city secured a $65 billion investment from semiconductor manufacturer TSMC to build a large-scale industrial facility in the Valley. She also oversaw a massive expansion of Phoenix's shade tree program as well as the start of Arizona State University's new medical school.

Gallego drew criticism in 2021 and 2022 for a perceived delayed response to Phoenix police's controversial use of force policies that sparked a United States Department of Justice investigation. That investigation is still underway.

Her reelection campaign seeks to build on her successes, promising to focus on expanding Phoenix's job opportunities, investment in public safety and parks as well as securing long-term water access for the city.

Gallego previously sat on the Phoenix City Council from 2013 to 2018, resigning to run for mayor. If re-elected, Gallego would serve through 2028.

"There’s so much more to do. I’m asking voters to work with me for four more years to build Phoenix’s future, and continue to create a city that works for everyone," Gallego said.

Gallego reports starting with over $1.25 million cash on hand for the campaign.
