Authorities say a Phoenix man is facing a charge of first-degree murder after allegedly killing his ex-girlfriend with a hammer.
At his initial court appearance Monday, a $1 million bond was set for 25-year-old Caleb Shaffery. He doesn't have a lawyer yet.
According to court paperwork, Shaffery called 911 on Sunday evening to say he killed his ex-girlfriend at his home.
Shaffery allegedly lured Veronica McGarvy into a room where he hit her several times in the head with a roofing hammer and then stabbed her in the chest.
Both the hammer and the knife were found at the scene along with the couple's 3-year-daughter who wasn't harmed.
Investigators say Shaffery recently learned through social media that McGarvy was dating one of his former co-workers.
