Monsoon winds rip the roof off a Phoenix apartment complex

Debris from the roof landed on cars all over the parking lot while also uprooting a palm tree nearby. Even more pieces of that roof slammed into a building and a man across the street.

PHOENIX - With little warning or regard for anybody inside, Mother Nature's fury blew the roof right off an apartment complex at 25th Street and Van Buren Monday afternoon.

"I heard a boom and then I looked outside and said, ' oh man the tree,'" a still shocked Anthony Campbell said.

Campbell and his wife were in an apartment across the street when the stormed rolled in.

"To me it sounded like a train, like a roaring train," Campbell said.

Debris from the roof landed on cars all over the parking lot while also uprooting a palm tree nearby. Even more pieces of that roof slammed into a building across the street. There's no telling how far it might have traveled.

"I was literally five feet away from it as everything fell down." a witness said.

He watched as pieces of the roof crashed into another man standing across the street. The Phoenix Fire Department says that man was transported to a local trauma center with lacerations on his forehead.

"Long term, he should be OK," Capt. Larry Subervi with Phoenix Fire said.

Somehow, someway nobody else was hurt in what will go down as a reminder of Mother Nature's clout during the monsoon.

Phoenix police said 20 people in the apartment complex were displaced by the storm.
