Mesa pizza restaurant organist dies from stroke complications

Charlie Balogh was the organist at Organ Stop Pizza in Mesa before his death.

A longtime organist at a pizza shop in Mesa died this week from complications of a stroke.

Charlie Balogh was the organist at Organ Stop Pizza in Mesa before his death.

"Organ Stop Pizza has truly lost a great talent and wonderful human being," the restaurant said in a statement.

"Charlie leaves behind an incredible legacy, especially in the organ world," the statement continued.

"No words can express our sadness at Charlie’s death or our gratitude for his commitment and love for Organ Stop Pizza through the years."

Balogh, a New Jersey native, began musical instruction when he was just 11 years old and continued through classical organ instruction at Trenton State College.

He began his professional playing career at the Phoenix Organ Stop in 1973 before spending 14 years performing at The Roaring 20’s restaurant starting in 1976 and moving back to Arizona in 1991.

Balogh had also been named “Organist of the Year” by the American Theatre Organ Society in 2006.

Balogh's brother has set up a GoFundMe account to help the family with expenses. It raised more than $10,000 of its $75,000 goal as of Sunday afternoon.
