Mesa crash involves Valley Metro bus, car and truck

The driver of a car hit the bus first, then spun and hit a truck, police say.

MESA, Ariz. — Police have identified the man who died following a crash in Mesa that involved a car, a truck and a Valley Metro bus.

Mesa police received a call regarding a crash at Southern Avenue and Gilbert Road around 5:30 a.m. Police and the fire department responded to the scene and found three vehicles: a car, a truck and a Valley Metro bus.

Police said it appears that the driver of the car, later identified as  45-year-old Joseph Christenson, was traveling east and then crossed the center line into westbound traffic, where he crashed into the bus first and then spun before crashing into the truck.

There were no injuries reported from the truck or the bus, but Christenson was trapped inside the vehicle. Fire personnel were able to extricate him, but was pronounced dead at the scene. Christenson was the only occupant in the car.

Investigators are waiting on testing to determine if there was a medical issue or impairment that led up to the crash.
