Arson suspected in fatal Mesa mobile home fire

Around 2 a.m. on Friday, police received a call about a fire near Center Street and McKellips Road, officials said.

MESA, Ariz. — Authorities have identified the person who died following a fire at a mobile home fire in Mesa, the city's police department said. Officials said an accelerant was found at the scene and they have opened a suspicious death investigation.

Around 2 a.m. on Friday, police received a call about a fire near Center Street and McKellips Road, officials said. The person who reported the call said several mobile homes were on fire.

When officers arrived, Mesa police said they assisted with evacuating anyone they could from the engulfed homes in the surrounding area.

Police said the fire department assumed command of the scene when they arrived. Mesa PD said three mobile homes were on fire and possibly more were damaged.

As the fire was being extinguished in one of the homes, the fire department found a person, later identified as 62-year-old Randy Floyd, inside dead.

"Evidence of an accelerant was detected on scene and it is believed that the three fires were started as a result of arson, which makes the death suspicious," a statement from Mesa PD said.

The cause of death wasn't immediately known.

The investigation into the fire is ongoing.
