Massive 272-acre regional park in the works in Gilbert

GILBERT, Ariz. - Gilbert residents may, in just a few years, have a new place to take the family to enjoy the great outdoors. A 272-acre regional park is in the works near the southwest corner of Higley and Queen Creek roads.

According to the city's website, the design of the park's Phase 1 has begun and is expected to be completed by June 2018. Features will include sports courts, a roughly 8-acre lake, a large, "iconic" playground and splash pad.

Construction on Phase 1 is expected to begin this year during summer and finish a year later. Phase 2 could start and finish at the same time with Phase 3 expected to start in July of 2022 and finish in 2023, according to city documents.

According to city plan documents, the total cost of the project is estimated over $100 million.
