Arizona inmate who killed Gilbert police officer dies in prison

The inmate was convicted of killing Lt. Eric Shuhandler during a traffic stop in 2010.

PHOENIX — The man convicted of murdering a Gilbert police lieutenant in 2010 has recently died in prison.

Christopher Redondo, 49, died at the Lewis prison in Buckeye on Jan. 26, according to the Arizona Department of Corrections. His cause of death was not disclosed.

Redondo was serving a life sentence for a first-degree murder conviction in relation to a violent traffic stop that resulted in the death of Lt. Eric Shuhandler, a 16-year police veteran. After shooting the officer, Redondo and an accomplice led police on a 50-mile chase along the U.S. 60 before they were taken into custody.
