Board accepts Paul Penzone's resignation, looking for interim sheriff

The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors said Chief Deputy Russ Skinner will run the agency until a new sheriff is appointed.

MARICOPA COUNTY, Ariz. — The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors has assigned Chief Deputy Russ Skinner to run the sheriff's office after Paul Penzone officially resigns on Jan. 12.

Skinner will only remain in charge until the BOS appoints an interim sheriff who will finish out the last year of Penzone's term. A new sheriff will be elected in November 2024.

The board will be accepting applications for the interim position until Jan. 19. Candidates must be registered in the same political party as Penzone's and be a resident of Maricopa County.

Penzone, who was elected in 2016, announced a couple of months ago he was leaving the sheriff's office to take a job with Blue Cross Blue Shield.
