Handwritten notes from John Milton found in 437-year-old book in Phoenix

The handwriting of Milton was found in an Alfred Knight Collection copy of "Holinshed's Chronicles."

PHOENIX — If you've ever visited Burton Barr Central Library in the heart of downtown Phoenix, you may be familiar with the treasure trove awaiting you inside. From countless books and a family resource center to activity passes and views of downtown, there is plenty to enjoy.

But this spring, there was one more treasure inside.

Global scholars and Arizona State University faculty members gathered in the Rare Book Room to look at a 437-year-old book with handwritten notes by the famed author of "Paradise Lost," John Milton. The book, an Alfred Knight Collection copy of "Holinshed's Chronicles," is dated 1587.

Believed to be very popular in its time, “Holinshed’s Chronicles” was used as a source for much of Shakespeare’s works, according to a news release from the Phoenix Public Library. This was likely John Milton’s personal copy of the book and is also only the third book with Milton’s notes known to history.

If you want to see the rare treasure yourself, you can: From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays, you can explore the Rare Book Room at Burton Barr.
