Explosions heard in north Phoenix neighborhood

Police said they have received several reports since October of residents hearing explosions.

A series of explosions in a north Phoenix neighborhood has prompted a police investigation. Police said residents have reported hearing explosions in the area since October.

Police said many of the explosions were reported in the area of 43rd Avenue to 27th Avenue and West Greenway Road to Union Hill Drive.

Resident Joe Bob Grisham's home security camera captured one of the explosions. You can hear a loud boom and see a flash across the street, the blast wave rattling the camera slightly. White smoke can then be seen drifting from the site of the explosion.

Officers said they were unable to locate the source of the explosion noise in many of the cases. However, in some other cases, police said, they found items that might provide clues.

Adan Sanchez, who lives in the neighborhood, said the explosions don't sound like fireworks.

"It's a big blast. It's definitely not an M-80, it's definitely not a firework. It's definitely some type of explosive powder ordinance," he said.

The police department's bomb squad detectives are investigating.
