PHOENIX - The rise and fall of Metroceter Mall sparked nostalgia this week, and the developer says the mall will look very different, but it will not be razed.

"Each of these concepts involves some level of redevelopment and new construction, but there are no plans in place at this time for a complete demolition," Warren Fink, CEO of Carlyle Development Group said in an email.

The mall was rezoned in June, and a KJZZ article published Thursday was titled, "Goodbye, Metrocenter Mall: Why A Developer Plans To Demolish A Phoenix Landmark."

The story shook many of those who fondly remember the area as the hip "hang out spot" in decades past.

"We won't be saying 'goodbye' to Metrocenter for a long time, but we will be saying 'hello' to a new hub that we hope will serve the community for years to come," Fink said in an email to 12 News.

The plans for the new version of Metrocenter include office space, housing for seniors and multifamily units. Until June, Metrocenter Mall was just zoned for retail space.

A future light rail expansion is expected to reach Metrocenter Mall by 2023.
